Barges are flat-bottomed transport ships designed primarily for use on rivers and canals, not on the open ocean. While some barges are self-propelled, others must be pushed or pulled by towboats. Barges are generally operated by a captain and a pilot who steer the towboat as it pushes or pulls a group of barges which have been rigged together, often referred to as “the tow”.
