The U.S. Coast Guard along with the Alabama Marine Patrol, Alabama Marine Resources and the Mobile County Sheriff’s Office are continuing their efforts to locate 4 individuals reported missing in Mobile Bay following heavy storms late Saturday.

The missing boaters are all believed to have been participating in a sailing regatta when the inclement weather rolled in at approximately 4:30 p.m., causing multiple vessels to capsize.

“In a combined effort, our multi-agency responders have been searching within the entirety of Mobile Bay and its approaches,” said Capt. Duke Walker, Commander of Coast Guard Sector Mobile, “To quantify that with landmarks, we have been searching from Petit Bois Island to Gulf Shores, and our search area has even extended as far as 27 miles south of Dauphin Island. Our assets have covered more than 3,060 square miles since the onset of the case.”

Initially, the number of people reported missing was five but that fifth individual was discovered at his home on Sunday evening in good condition. According to officials, he had registered for the regatta but withdrew prior to the start of the event.

The search for the missing 4 remains ongoing.
