On Tuesday, August 16, 2011, a maritime worker was killed when a crane collapsed onboard a production platform owned by Energy Resource Technology, a subsidiary of Houston-headquartered Helix Energy Solutions Group. The accident occurred approximately 75 miles southeast of Galveston.
According to the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management, Regulation and Enforcement (BOEMRE), the crane was in the process of moving a large piece of equipment from the platform onto a waiting work boat when the boom hoist cable suddenly failed. The crane ultimately collapsed, causing the crane’s harness to strike and kill the unidentified worker. No other injuries were reported.
