A commercial fishing vessel capsized late Tuesday night approximately 10 miles off the coast of New Jersey. The maritime accident left one dead and required another member of the crew to be rescued by a passing ship. The overturned vessel, a 44-foot commercial fishing boat named the Mandy Ness, was based out of Barnegat Light.

According to officials, once a specially-designed beacon onboard the fishing vessel became wet, it automatically broadcast a signal alerting the Coast Guard to the offshore emergency. The Guard immediately dispatched a helicopter and a rescue boat. While the accident remains under investigation, it has been noted that the conditions, 3 foot seas with 17 mile per hour winds, were not particularly rough given the time of year.

It only takes a split second for a maritime accident to occur.
